Free Splitwise alternatives that do not nag you

Splitwise was free for a long time. It is still free in the sense that you can use it without paying, but the free experience changed: there are ads, and there is a cap on how many expenses you can add in a day.
That cap is the one that bites, because it hits at exactly the wrong moment. Nobody adds expenses evenly. You get home from a four-day trip, sit down to enter thirty things, and get stopped partway through.
So: what is actually free, and what do you give up.
What the Splitwise free tier limits

The core — groups, splitting, the reduced settle-up — still works. If you add expenses steadily as they happen rather than in one batch, you may never hit the cap. If you are a batch-at-the-end group, you will hit it every trip.

Genuinely free options
Settle Up
The most straightforwardly free option. No ads, no cap, no paid tier pushing at you. Works offline, and you can start without an account.
Does groups, uneven splits and reduces the debts properly. That is essentially all it does — no receipts, no planning, a plain interface.
Give up: anything beyond splitting, and any visual polish.
Tricount
Free with an optional premium tier that is easy to ignore. Its standout property is that you can share a trip by link and people can take part without signing up, which is the single biggest adoption unblocker in this category.
Give up: it is less known in India, so you have to explain it.
TripSynk
Ours. Free — splitting, the reduced settle-up, the shared trip album, the itinerary, and receipt scanning that reads a photographed bill or a UPI screenshot. No ads, no cap on expenses. Worth noting that receipt scanning is a paid feature on Splitwise.
We do intend to charge eventually, aimed at trip organisers running trips commercially rather than at friends splitting a holiday. That is a statement of intent and you have no way to hold us to it, so weigh it accordingly.
Give up: no offline mode, no percentage splits, no web app, and we are newer than the others.
A spreadsheet
Free, universal, infinitely flexible, and what a lot of groups genuinely use.
The honest problem is not the maths. It is that nobody opens Sheets on their phone while standing at a counter with a card in their hand, so expenses get entered at the end from memory and bank statements — which is where the errors and the arguments come from.
There is a second problem: reducing the debts to the fewest transfers requires someone to actually do the algebra. Most spreadsheet groups end up with a pairwise list, look at fifteen lines, and give up on settling.
Give up: logging at the time, and the settle-up reduction, unless you build it.
What to check before switching
Two things decide whether a switch sticks, and neither is on a feature list.
Will the whole group install it? An app used by four of six people is worse than nothing, because now there are two ledgers and one of them is in a chat. This kills more switches than any missing feature. Apps that let people join by link have a real edge here.
Does it reduce the transfers? Six people owing each other in pieces is up to fifteen debts. Nobody makes fifteen transfers, so nobody makes any. Verify the app collapses that to three or four before you rely on it — that reduction is where the actual benefit lives, and not every free option does it.
And the thing none of them do
No expense splitting app available in India moves money. Not Splitwise, not the free ones, not us. Payment initiation requires a licence; a splitting app is a ledger. All of them end the same way: they tell you the amount and the person, and you send it from your bank or UPI app.
If a comparison implies otherwise, it is wrong about the product.
The short answer
If Splitwise's cap is what is annoying you and you want a straight replacement, use Settle Up or Tricount. Both are free without an angle.
If the thing that actually bothers you every trip is not the splitting at all — it is that the photos vanish afterwards — then no amount of better splitting will fix it, and that is worth being clear-eyed about before you spend an evening migrating.
