What a Kerala trip actually costs for a group of 6

Kerala is the most comfortable of the standard Indian group trips and the least likely to produce a disaster. It is also the one where a single decision — the houseboat — sets the budget, and it is consistently mispriced by groups planning it.
These are realistic 2026 numbers for six people, six nights, covering Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey.

Flights to Kochi are ₹4,000–12,000 return from most metros.
Where the money goes
The houseboat — priced per boat, not per person
This is the misunderstanding. Houseboats are quoted per boat per night, usually including all meals, and the price is driven by the number of bedrooms.
A two-bedroom boat is ₹8,000–14,000 a night. A three-bedroom is ₹12,000–22,000. Premium and air-conditioned boats go well beyond that.
For six people, one three-bedroom boat for a night works out ₹2,000–3,700 each including all meals, which is genuinely good value and much better than two smaller boats. Groups that book two two-bedroom boats spend more and split the group in half for the best night of the trip.
One night is the right amount. Two is a lot of time on a boat, and the novelty does not survive it.
Book direct or through a reputable operator rather than at the Alleppey jetty, where the negotiation is unpleasant and the boat is often not what was described.
Stay elsewhere
Kochi guesthouses in Fort Kochi are ₹1,200–2,500 a room; heritage hotels ₹4,000–9,000. Munnar has a wide range — ₹1,500–3,000 for a basic room, ₹5,000–12,000 for a resort with a view, and the view is a large part of why you are there.
For six, homestays and villas are strong in Kerala and often better value than three hotel rooms.
Transport — larger than people expect
Kerala is a driving trip. Kochi to Munnar is four hours, Munnar to Alleppey is four to five.
A car with driver for six days runs ₹2,500–4,000 a day for a vehicle seating six or seven, including fuel and the driver's allowance. That is ₹15,000–24,000 for the trip, so ₹2,500–4,000 each. Buses and trains are far cheaper but the route is awkward with luggage and eats a day.
The driver's food and accommodation allowance is usually extra and is the classic forgotten line.
Food
A meal is ₹200–500 at local places, ₹600–1,200 at nicer restaurants. Houseboat and homestay stays usually include meals, which reduces both the cost and the ledger complexity.
Kerala's toddy shops are cheap and one of the better things about the trip.
Activities
Kathakali performance ₹300–500. Munnar tea museum and plantation visits a few hundred. Periyar boat safari ₹500–1,500. Backwater canoe tours ₹800–1,500. Ayurvedic massage ₹1,500–3,500.
Much of Kerala's appeal is free: Fort Kochi's streets, the Chinese fishing nets, the tea slopes, the beaches.
The three costs groups forget
The driver's allowance. Food and accommodation for the driver on a multi-day trip, ₹400–700 a day, quoted separately from the vehicle rate and reliably forgotten.
Munnar's altitude and weather. People pack for a beach state and arrive somewhere cold and wet. Jackets get bought.
The Alleppey day shape. Houseboats board around noon and disembark around 9am. That is a half-day each side, and groups plan it as a full day and lose one.
Keeping the ledger straight
Kerala is an easy ledger. Most of the money is a small number of large bookings — the car, the boat, the rooms — usually paid by one or two people in advance.
That is exactly the pattern that needs logging on the day it is paid rather than at the end. Someone who books a ₹18,000 houseboat six weeks out is carrying a meaningful chunk of the group's money on their card, and if it only appears in the ledger during the final reckoning it tends to arrive alongside a slight edge in the conversation.
Log the big bookings when they happen, keep the daily small stuff logged as you pay, and settle before people fly home in different directions.
