Weekend trips from Bangalore: what each one actually costs a group
· 4 min read
Bangalore is unusually well placed for a two-night trip, which is why the same five destinations come up every time. They are not equivalent in cost, and the difference is mostly driven by how far you drive and whether the group needs one vehicle or two.
These are realistic 2026 numbers for six people, two nights, leaving Friday evening.
The comparison
Per person, two nights, mid-range:
| Distance | Transport | Stay | Food | Per head | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coorg | 260 km | ₹1,800 | ₹2,800 | ₹1,800 | ₹6,900 |
| Chikmagalur | 245 km | ₹1,700 | ₹2,500 | ₹1,600 | ₹6,300 |
| Wayanad | 280 km | ₹2,000 | ₹2,800 | ₹1,700 | ₹7,000 |
| Gokarna | 480 km | ₹3,200 | ₹2,200 | ₹1,800 | ₹7,700 |
| Pondicherry | 310 km | ₹2,200 | ₹3,200 | ₹2,400 | ₹8,300 |
Add a few hundred each for activities. The spread is smaller than people expect — the real differences are drive time and what the trip feels like, not cost.
The transport decision
For six people this is the whole budget question.
A self-drive rental — a Innova or similar seating seven — is ₹3,500–5,500 a day plus fuel. For a two-night trip that is roughly ₹10,000–16,000 all in, so ₹1,700–2,700 each. One vehicle, everyone together, luggage fine.
Two cars costs slightly more and reliably fragments the group. Two cars means two conversations, two arrival times and two sets of decisions about where to stop.
A cab with driver is ₹4,000–6,000 a day and worth it for Gokarna, where the drive is long enough that nobody wants to do it after a Friday at work.
Buses are cheap — ₹500–1,200 each way — and fine for Gokarna and Pondicherry, poor for Coorg and Chikmagalur where you want a vehicle once you arrive.
The rule of thumb: under 300km, self-drive one vehicle. Over 400km on a Friday night, take a bus or a driver.
The destinations
Coorg
The default, and slightly overrun because of it. Coffee estates, Abbey Falls, Dubare elephant camp, Raja's Seat. Homestays on estates are the good version and run ₹3,500–8,000 for a cottage sleeping several.
Best for a group that wants to sit around, eat well and walk a bit. Weak if you want a plan.
Chikmagalur
Coorg with fewer people and better hills. Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka and drivable most of the way. Estate stays ₹3,000–7,000.
The cheapest of the five and probably the best value.
Wayanad
Across the border in Kerala, so add a state border and slightly more drive time. Edakkal Caves, Chembra Peak, Banasura Sagar. Better trekking than Coorg or Chikmagalur.
Best if the group actually wants to walk. Note that Chembra requires a permit and has a daily cap.
Gokarna
The beach option, and the longest drive. Om Beach, Kudle, Paradise. Beach shacks and huts are cheap — ₹800–2,500 — which offsets the transport.
Take an overnight bus Friday and come back Sunday night. Driving it after work is a bad idea.
Pondicherry
The most expensive, mostly because food and stay are pricier and everyone eats and drinks more. French Quarter, Auroville, Serenity Beach.
The one that feels least like a weekend and most like a small holiday. Also the one where the group budget most reliably overruns, because it is a place designed for spending.
The costs groups forget
Fuel and tolls both ways. On a 260km round trip that is ₹3,000–4,500 for the vehicle, and it is the single most commonly unlogged expense because it gets paid in pieces by whoever is nearest a pump.
The Friday night dinner. Leaving at 7pm means eating on the highway. Not large, universally unplanned.
The self-drive deposit and fuel policy. Rentals are usually full-to-full, and a group that returns it empty pays a premium rate for the top-up.
Estate stay meal rules. Many homestays include meals, some charge per meal. Groups that assume the first end up with a bill they had not budgeted.
Keeping it simple
A weekend trip does not need much ledger discipline, but it needs some, because the money is genuinely uneven — one person puts the whole stay on their card, another pays for fuel three times, a third covers dinner.
Two habits are enough. Log as you pay, especially fuel, which is the one that vanishes. And settle on the drive home or that Sunday night, because a weekend trip balance that survives until Monday tends to survive until it is forgotten — and small amounts left owing between friends are more corrosive than large ones, precisely because nobody thinks they are worth mentioning.
